I once heard that we only use about 10% of our brain's potential, and this thought has me a bit concerned.
Here's my thought. When I add new info to my brain, is it kicking out some of the old stuff, or just adding to the mix? Because if it's the former, I have a real fear that all the passwords and sign-ins and PINs I have to remember are knocking out some of the really important stuff.
Take this blog for example. Sign in, and type. Simple enough. But when you haven't done it for awhile, three weeks to be exact, there is more to it. For instance:
Userid - Seems simple. It's my e-mail address. But wait! I have 5 -- count them -- FIVE e-mail addresses! There's my old company address, my new company address, old personal addresses which friends use, new "diva" addresses used for website mail, etc. So, first I have to remember which e-mail I used to set this blog up. Big Hint - Not the one I was trying to log in under for ten minutes. Which brings me to another issue: Passwords.
Now, I usually try to keep this simple. I have a few passwords that I use as much as possible. But I've introduced new passwords for the new e-mail addresses and site managers. So I have a few others to run through. But by first using the wrong Userid, which I thought was correct, I thought my password was wrong. Which sends me off on a tangent of running through every password I commonly use. Which is now up to about 10. Try all ten. Nothing. Finally, a desperate request to e-mail me a reset link. Then five minutes spent waiting for it AT THE WRONG E-MAIL! Then a thought! I believe I was trying to work in my new e-mail address (which is never used except on this blog!) So, I go to that e-mail, fortunately having written down the password, and sure enough - there is the message with a link. So I click the link...
Which takes me to a message saying to follow the e-mails instructions to reset my password. But, didn't I just do that? Isn't that why I'm here? Back to the instructions. Did I miss something? Click again. And another crazy mix of letters for me to type in (Is that an "m" or two close "n"s? Screw it, click again for new letters, put glasses on, type best I can -- got it!!)
Now, reset password. ****** "Not accepted. Must be 8 letters." Could they not have told me that in the beginning? Okay. ******** Accepted finally. Scribble out old password. OH WAIT! It is the correct password for the e-mail sign-in. Rewrite it again marked "e-mail". Also rewrite with other password and mark "blog". Hide where that stuff is hidden. Now, pray I don't forget where that is, what with having to add new password to my brain! How ironic if the new password makes me lose the info in my brain telling me where to find my list of sites and passwords in a pinch!?
Finally, in my Blogspace. Ready to begin writing! Now, what the heck is it I was going to write about???........
